 Today our classroom signed up for the Summer Leanring Journey. We did something called art colouring book you recreated a famous photo by doing it with differnt colors or trying to make it look the same. I tried to recreate the image Wattermelon Seller! It was fun and this is what I did.

Today we did a general knowledge test on different things. I scored 9 out of 15 and I am happy about that. We did another one of those things where we learn about what happened and I chose this because I found it interesting. This was really run and we only had half an hour to do this so hopefully, you enjoy!

Kaiora. This week our school is doing Maori things and this is my second post. I had 493 frames and it took me about 3-5 hours to make in two days. I made this gif based on a Maori design but it was a challenge. Here is the video and I hope you enjoy it! and sorry for the thing down the bottom... 

Maori week. Word search

Today my friend Reid and I made a world search. The words are Ako, Aroha, Iwi, Kai, Tori. Can you find them? I liked making it because of the rulling and I got better at it too! I didn't I found it tricky to write neat words. So. Can you find them?

 

William Pike refection

This is my reflection of William Pike. But first, William Pike is great because of all of the opportunities that you have. Basically what you do is you go on trips, like skiing, rafting, rock climbing. You have to do community service for a certain amount of hours and a passion project for a certain amount of hours. This is what I have written my refection on rock climbing and rafting

Rafting

Rafting on the Arnold River was awesome! On Tuesday 21th or July, we went rafting. My second favorite thing to do is rafting. I still like hiking the best. Rafting is a great experience and it’s exciting for most people. Before rafting, we were at school waiting for the bus. When the van arrived we drove into town, they took us to there “equipment store” and we got all our tools ready. Our raincoat sort of thing, life jacket and helmet. Then we travelled to the place we were about to raft on. The five instructors introduce themselves. They gave us some cool facts about some leaves and other things we could eat to help us in the wild if we ever needed it. Then they told us about safety on the raft and how to pull someone up if they fell out. 

After that, the fun began.

I didn’t really step out of my comfort zone because I have done rafting a lot of times with my friends and family, but the biggest challenge was probably working with people that you haven’t worked with before. I had 5 people in my raft. Rhys, Grace W, Brayden, the instructor (Georgia) and me. The best part of rafting was the rapids. They weren’t very big, but it was really fun, my second favorite part was standing on the edge of the raft without holding a paddle. I didn’t fall in somehow but I jumped in seconds later. 

Sadly the rafting ended and we played a few games on the grassy field where we stopped. We played three games. Evaluation, woctopus and a game I can’t remember the name of. We had to get in pairs of two and the person would say “face to toe” and one person would put there head on the other person toe. The game was about teamwork. Then we got in the vans and drove home on around two 2 o clock. When we got back to the little shed we gave them their gear back and got dressed in our warm clothes. After that they asked for feedback and asked us some questions like, “what would you do differently next time?” then we drove to school where we got picked up by our parents. 

As I said at the start rafting was awesome!

Rock climbing

On Thursday the 23rd, two days after rafting we went rock climbing! Sadly it was wet so we couldn’t go rock climbing on real rocks because if we went rock climbing on real rocks it might be dangerous. So instead we went to the rec centre by ST. Patricks. When I walked in there and looked at the walls I thought it would be a piece of cake! I thought… it was more challenging when I started to climb it because when it comes to hights I’m a scardy cat. Anyway, before I get to climbing here is the back story. It all started when we were at school. We had just gone rafting a day before that day but who cares? We were about to go rock climbing! So some vans came to Paroa School and we got in. When I went to clip my seatbelt in I discovered that it was indeed munted. So I got first class, the man offered me to come in the front seat with him so that I didn’t have to sit by the girls and I could still talk to my friends. Anyway we got to the Rec Center and we meet some of our instructors and they showed us the jobs that we could do. After about an hour we went climbing. They set us into groups of three. I was with Alisha and Georgia. So they made me go climbing first. Before we started they told us to say things like “ready to climb” and “ok” when they asked me, “what do you say?” so I said “if I don’t return tell my friends that they were great” then I started to climb. This was a really tall wall with lots of tiny pieces that I had to climb on. I was happy with myself, I got about halfway. They couldn’t get past the first few rocks. That’s one advantage of being small. Anyway, I came down and did a job called the backup rope or something similar to that. If the person who was belaying stopped and let go I would rush up to the lock in the rope and pull the rope down. After they tried to complete it they didn’t and we moved to a much easier stage. I didn’t complete that one either but Georgia did. I had a go at belaying Alisha. It was really easy we only four steps. I had to grip it, pull it down to lock it, put my hand on the opposite rope that was in the lock and hold it and slide my hand up and restart. After we had finished for a lunch break the instructors showed us them climbing the hardest wall. It didn’t look fun… but after that, we started climbing again. About half an hour later we stopped climbing and we played some games. Oh, and I saw some of my old friends from St. Patricks a year ago. But they are now in high school. So, in conclusion, rock climbing is my third favourite activity.

The most challenging part of making the drawing was the introduction.
That's because I had to have a strong intro that I could carry on.

Daily connection question

Home learning has its disadvantages and advantages. These are three of my thoughts on what I think is good and what is bad. First I will talk about the advantages and then the disadvantages. 

The good things about home learning are we are decreasing the spread of COVID-19 so we can go back to school sooner and save some lives of people. We also don’t have as many distractions. Your friends can’t bump you and talk to you. Home learning is a good excuse to get work done and mute your emails and turn your devices off. The last good thing is we get more time to spend on some projects. Like last week I spent about 4 hours on my maths angles because I did heaps of internet research, so now I am really good at that. I also spent a lot of days researching and planning my Matariki video.

The disadvantages of home learning are:

We don’t get teacher time. We can’t walk up to our teachers and ask them to explain what a word means. We have to email it, but most of the time it doesn’t teach us much. One of the biggest problems is kids do their work but don’t take the time to understand what it means. They also finish really early. So some kids don’t learn anything and the teachers can’t do anything about that apart from telling them they have to keep doing their work. For some questions, we have to email our teachers and they can’t tell us instantly so that wastes some time. Some kids don’t even do their tasks! 

So these are the good things and bad things about home learning in my opinion.

Matariki- writing topic

Hello guys, today our teachers have set us a Matariki topic. Our topic is to reflect on our past year, and the good things that have happened, the lessons we have learned, and some things that have happened with our families.

Before I start I would like to talk about Matariki. Matariki is a cluster of stars that you can see rising in late May or early June. The Maori call these seven stars Matariki. The English call them the Pleiades. For Maori, Matariki is the celebration of the New Year and the cycle of life and death. Some of us might think that it is weird because we celebrate New Year on January the 1st, but really it does not matter which day you choose as the first day of the New Year.

The celebration of Matariki died out in the 1940s but since the 2000s it has become popular again!

If you look directly at the Matariki star cluster you can only see six or seven stars, but if you look at it with the corner of your eye you see lots more stars twinkling! That's because the outside of our eyes is more sensitive to light than the center of our eyes.

There are lots of legends of Matariki, but the one I found most interesting was the story of a boy's parents who decided to separate. When the boy found out his parents were separated the god of wind called Tawhirimatea tore out his eyes and threw them into the sky to make Matariki!

Matariki is 440 light-years away. A light year is a distance that light travels in 365.25 days, so that is a long, long way because light travels at 299,792 km per the second! The distance from the Earth to the Sun is 93 million km. If that was only 25mm then the distance to Matariki would 708km.

Now to begin with my topic.

I have learned many great lessons this past year, but that's not surprising because I have had some great teachers and friends and family to learn from! one big lesson I learned is not to let your doubts and fears stop you from doing things. In term 4 last year my friend and I had to sing California Dreamin' in front of our own in front of our school! as the day got closer I was freaking out and was thinking up excuses to pull out. But I didn't and as soon as we stood up in front of the school I suddenly really confident and we sang really well.  So the lesson I learned there was don't let fear hold you back.

Another lesson I learned was not to do one-handed push-ups on a soccer ball by a muddy puddle. I tried, and two minutes later my mum was putting my clothes in the washing machine and I was in the shower washing mankey water out of my hair!

I have had lots of successes this year, like learning to build a huge chook house and pour concrete, getting into rep soccer, playing hockey and enjoying it, being a school captain, and lots of other things.

On the family side, the best news is that no one died or got really sick! My cousin Hayley broke her foot badly, but she's coming right which is good. My cousins Matt and Emma had a baby boy, and my whole family went to the North Island for a big family Christmas which was really nice.

So the last 12 months have been really good for me, even with the COVID-19 lockdown.
